Grandma: You lived a full life

One of the first cakes I was able to make, was for my my grandmother about three years ago. October 2nd will be one year since she passed away. Living to be 91 years old is quite an accomplishment, especially with all the obstacles she was faced with. Every time I look at the cake I made for her, I will always remember her facial expression when she found out that her "Little Coura" made the cake herself. It brings a smile to my face.

I Am An American Soldier: A Military Tribute

In the month of February, both of my brothers came home from the military, Mark from Iraq and Christopher from Texas. Soldiers, no money or no award could be enough for what they do for our country. I deeply respect the men that serve our country.
I made a cake for Mark to honor him. I wanted the cake to be all camo and then i had an army helmet and it had dogtags and an american flag and the words "I am an American Soldier".

So I had a request for a cake and they wanted it to be a make up pad. When I think of make up, that could be anything (which I actually don't know much about). So i decided to do a make up pad of eye shadow. My only problem was, where was the mirror going to go and how was I going to make it? So I decided to make 2 9" circle cakes, one would be the top with the mirror and the other would be the actual make up pad. What I liked about this cake was all the different shades I could do as the "eye shadow". I didn't just limit them to neutral skin tone like colors. I decided to do something bright and happy and fun.

I learned to decorate cakes at Coldstone. so after I stopped working there, I started decorating cakes on my own. One of the first cakes I made was for my friend Jeannette. It was dora the explorer. Then after it was a cake for my grandma. I also always decorated cakes for the kids I nanny. Every year when their birthdays come around, we decide a theme and I would make their cakes. With Cameron it was always "Quiet Bear" goes on an expedition somewhere. The boys first cake I made was Pirates of the Caribbean. For the longest time I thought it was my favorite cake ever, but I've learned that every cake is different and that each cake has its own story. So this is my time to document the story and share the experience :)

The Place I learned..

I decided that I would start a blog. I learned to decorate cakes at Coldstone Creamery in 2005. Every saturday I would work the Cake shift. I would have to make the ice cream cake then wait a day and decorate. I would get all kinds of requests for cakes; different themes and all different sizes. I sometimes would have 5 to 10 cakes due all within hours from one another, most of them being full sheet cakes. Holidays, especially this one mother's day, i built about 40 ice cream cakes and decorated all of those and some custom orders that would come in. In all of that, I started to enjoying making cakes. I started to view it as art, just in 3-D.
